Mexico Spotlight

Lorena Saravia
by Carina Leon

Commencing this blog is our first designer from Mexico, Lorena Saravia. Because she is a designer on Vogue's list of the top 21 designers from Vogue's Mexico's editors list, as of 2020, I was immediately attracted to her achievement and bold and confident styles. Further elaborating on Saravia's history, she Obtained her fashion design degree at the University of Design and Fashion in Barcelona, Spain, She mostly focuses on women's contemporary fashion, with hints of elegance and practicality to boldly and confidently dress the modern-day woman. She has even worked for BREAD AND BUTTER BARCELONA, GSTAR, RAW, AND MACARIO JIMÉNEZ. Furthermore, her constant style is acclaimed worldwide and captured by the press, giving her the title of one of the best designers of Mexico. She has recently designed a special Mexico shirt in hopes to contribute all of the profits in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Her store can be found in Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico and on Masaryk Avenue, one of the most luxurious fashion streets known in the country, equivalent to Beverly Hills.

   Lorena Saravia: New Collection 2022

1. For this look, Saravia gives a completely refreshing take on business casual, with ocean blue tones, a crop top, blazer, and pants, thus appealing to a more modern and younger audience. It also channels Mexico's famous blue oceans, like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta.

2. For this outfit, there is a theme of an elongated silhouette, utilizing whites, the color of some sands in Mexico, and exposing the stomach area for a more youthful, yet sophisticated approach.

3. As seen here, Saravia continues her elongated silhouette theme, with a white and sand earth tone, this time, in the form of a strapped dress. Overall, its appearance is gentle and feminine, and not to formal or traditional.

4. Here we see the use of a stronger palette, hot pink, channeling the sunset of Mexico, with an interesting diamond cut out for the upper portion of the dress. Again, she continues the use of the elongated silhouette, only this time, leaving more exposure to the upper part of the body and arms, thus appealing to youths.

5. For this outfit, Saravia is more daring and revealing, in comparison to her other attires, which usually tend to cover most, if not all, parts of the body. She uses an ocean tone for this look, again making the skirt longer, thus carrying the elongated look she is known for. In the end, this outfit is both contemporary, yet has hints of resort wear, perfect for the beautiful beaches of Mexico.

6. For this unique look, Saravia uses a monarch butterfly print, which are famously native to Mexico. Though she still utilizes the long silhouette in form of the pants and top with long sleeve, she makes this ensemble stand out, primarily because of the butterfly print on top of the earth tone, sand.

7. Here, we see an interesting take on Saravia's outfit of choice by combining elements of the ocean blue and sand palette, thus encapsulating the famous beaches of Mexico. This time, she is more revealing of the leg, with the slit, and the upper body in the form of exposure of the stomach and arms. It's definitely more modern and contemporary.

8. This look strongly shows Saravia's them of elongated shapes, even more than her other looks listed. What she does differently here is that she utilizes a strong silhouette, as seen through the shoulder pads, which makes this look stand out positively. The earth tones are still evident, utilizing the color of earth, or dirt, with a more exposed look, adding on to this powerful outfit.

9. Here, Saravia utilizes, once again, the concept of the beach through the ocean blue and sand colors of the outfit. This time, however, she incorporates a unique sense of style. She combines a skirt and pants into one, both long in shape, with a short top, leaving the stomach area exposed. It definitely looks sportier than her other outfits, but more comfortable.

10. For the final look here, we see the prominent use of the earth tone, sand, from head-to-toe. At the same time, it gives a more elegant approach to a casual look, given the balloon sleeves and elongated pants, which serve to cover up most of the body.

In conclusion, as illustrated by the images of Saravia's clothing, it is apparent that her style focuses primarily on elongated silhouettes that are, for the most part, earth tones, with hints of blue and pink to accentuate certain looks of the collection. They definitely channel the nature aspect Mexico is famous for, and are both sophisticated, yet simplistic. This is perfect for the customer seeking a contemporary look with a modern-day twist. In the future, join us in the next upcoming weeks where we will continue to look at fashion designers from all over the world, as we examine their cultural influences and bold creations.
