Thao Vu
by Kimberly Thai
Thao Vu is a Vietnamese fashion designer, artist, and eco-entrepreneur who became a leader in pioneering a group of young designers to immerse a creative space in their hometown, Hà Nội. Her clothing line is not only sustainable but also uniquely versatile for both men and women where they can be worn from day to evening, work, and play, along with featuring various innovative design elements of panels, folds, detachable scarves, and pleats, to suit each person's unique style. Many of her designs had been produced and showcased for contemporary dance, Elle Vietnam Runway in 2017. Aside from being a designer, she also gives opportunities to tourists to learn more about how they create indigo dye and use them in their clothing. As an eco-entrepreneur, she also makes the time and effort to take a bus trip from Hà Nội to Cao Bằng to collaborate with a group of Nùng An ethnic, textile artisan women. in growing and producing traditional indigo dye, to use its natural pigments for the fashion collections. The production of indigo dyeing involves the indigo bushels to be harvested within 2-3 years depending on the climate in Cao Bằng, then gets soaked in a tank of water to allow the dye to ferment or naturally bleed out of the indigo plants as it is weighted down by large stones. With traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, Kilomet 109 makes it possible.

Thao Vu Kilomet 109: Miên Collection 2020
1) In the first men's look, the natural blue dye color of the top and pants was achieved using indigo dyeing. Although they are paired together, two of the pieces can be seen worn separately.
3. For the third look, you'll begin to see the use of drapery in the dresses/tops to create a relaxed look that is comfortable, but fashionable to wear.
4. In the fourth look, we now begin to see the use of folds and pleats to give the dress more interest and structure.
5. For the next men's look, the outfit shows a combination of comfort and streetwear with the loose-fitted top and striped pants which elongates his height.
6. In this look, the long jacket can actually be seen to be worn by women and men since most of her collection is made to be versatile.
7. In this next look, the outfit on the model is very well put-together. The use of drapery or flowy pleats is seen again in the printed skirt.
8. Here, we see the striped pants again in this look. However, the top is switched out with a black, draped jacket. It shows that each of her clothing can be mixed-matched while still creating a cohesive look for different occasions.
9. For this duo look, the shades of indigo dye are apparent in an all-blue outfit. If they were to switch out the jackets with one another, you'll have a new, different outfit.
